In Illinois, IDOT issues a permit for moving a mobile home on state roads, and local roads and toll roads need separate permission. Illinois sells manufactured housing permits by width, and moves run in daylight with a shorter Saturday. A single-wide typically costs $3,500 to $6,500 to move and a double-wide $7,500 to $13,500, for a move of about an hour.
IDOT manufactured housing permits
The Illinois Department of Transportation sells term permits for manufactured housing by size. This is a summary from a compliance publisher.
| Up to | Height and length | 3-month | 12-month |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 feet wide | 14'6", 70 feet | $100 | $400 |
| 12 feet wide | 14'6", 115 feet | $150 | $600 |
| 16 feet wide | 15', 115 feet | $250 | $1,000 |
Term permits suit dealers and movers who make many moves. For a single home, a trip permit is usually the better fit, and we choose the permit that fits your move. Confirm everything with IDOT before you move.

Local roads, tolls and county taxes
An IDOT permit covers state roads only. Local jurisdictions and toll authorities need separate permission, and liability insurance of $500,000 per occurrence applies to many oversize loads. We arrange the route with each authority on the way.
Illinois taxes mobile homes through the Mobile Home Local Services Tax, handled by county treasurers. I could not read the county moving requirements, so ask your county treasurer whether a tax release or registration step applies before a move.
- Ask your county treasurer about the mobile home tax
- Have your title ready
- Ask your town or county about a placement permit at the new site
