Moving a mobile home in Texas involves two agencies: the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV) for oversize-load permits and escort rules, and the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA) for the moving permit, title and installation paperwork. A single-wide typically costs $3,500 to $6,500 to move and a double-wide $7,500 to $13,500, for a move of about an hour.

TxDMV oversize permits and escorts in Texas

TxDMV issues oversize-load permits, and applications are made online through its TxPROS system. For manufactured housing, TxDMV sets the escort rules by width.

Load width Escorts TxDMV requires
Over 16 feet One escort: in front on two-lane roads, behind on roads with four or more lanes
Over 18 feet Two escorts

TxDMV can also require law enforcement escorts, and the permit sets travel times and routes. Rules change, so confirm them with TxDMV before you move.

Texas housing department paperwork for a move

Texas manufactured homes are regulated by TDHCA as well as by TxDMV. TDHCA says a moving permit is required to transport a home on any city or county road. A home must also be installed by a bonded, licensed installer.

After the move there are two deadlines. The installer files a Notice of Installation within 7 working days of the installation, and the owner applies for a new Statement of Ownership (the title) within 60 days of relocating, with a copy of the moving permit.

Have these ready

  • Current title or Statement of Ownership
  • Proof that property taxes are paid
  • Make, model and serial number of the home
  • Current and new addresses
  • Your preferred moving dates

How much does it cost to move a mobile home in Texas?

A single-wide typically costs $3,500 to $6,500 to move in Texas, and a double-wide $7,500 to $13,500, for a move of about an hour. Most single-wides move within 24 hours, and double-wides within 24 to 48 hours.

  • Size. Homes wider than 16 feet need escorts.
  • Distance. Texas is big, and longer routes mean more driving time and fuel.
  • Permits. Permit fees are small next to the move, but escorts add cost.
  • Site work. Clearing a lot, blocking, hookups and skirting are priced separately.
