In Montana, the county treasurer issues a movement declaration before a mobile home moves. You need a tax receipt from the treasurer of the county where the move starts, and a copy of the declaration goes on the home. A single-wide typically costs $3,500 to $6,500 to move and a double-wide $7,500 to $13,500, for a move of about an hour.

The Montana movement declaration

Montana Code 15-24-206 sets the rule for moving a mobile or manufactured home from one point in Montana to another. Before it moves, you must:

  • Get a receipt from the county treasurer where the move starts, showing property taxes are paid
  • Deliver the signed declaration to that treasurer
  • State the home's destination in the declaration, verified under oath
  • Put a copy of the declaration in a conspicuous place on the home

The tax receipt and treasurer requirements do not apply to some moves, including bringing a home into Montana from outside the state. Read the law at Montana Code 15-24-206. This is an older posted version, so confirm it with your county treasurer.

Montana Department of Transportation rules

MDT issues oversize permits. These are the points that matter most for a mobile home, from a compliance publisher's summary.

Rule What to expect
Size limits Manufactured homes: 16 feet wide, 110 feet long, 15 feet 6 inches high
Tow vehicle At least a 100-inch wheelbase, with dual-wheel drive axles or wide-base tires
Escorts, non-interstate One front pilot vehicle from over 12 feet 6 inches up to 16 feet 6 inches wide
Travel hours Loads over 10 feet wide travel in daylight on non-interstate roads
Holidays Loads over 12 feet 6 inches wide barred on holidays and holiday weekends
Single-trip permit $10 for an oversize permit

Rules and fees change. Confirm them with MDT before you move.

What we handle

  • The oversize permit application
  • Pilot vehicles where the width requires them

Moving across Big Sky country

Montana is large and weather changes fast. Montana does not allow travel when a route is under severe driving conditions, so we build in extra days.

  • Winter closures and high winds are planned around
  • Long distances between towns mean longer driving days
  • We pick routes that fit the width and weight of the home
  • Hookups, skirting and tie-down are priced separately

What a mobile home move costs in Montana

A single-wide typically costs $3,500 to $6,500 to move, and a double-wide $7,500 to $13,500, for a move of about an hour. Most single-wides move within 24 hours, and double-wides within 24 to 48 hours.

  • Size. Homes over 12 feet 6 inches wide need a pilot vehicle.
  • Distance. Montana distances are long, so driving time matters.
  • Permits. County and MDT fees are small next to the move.
  • Site work. Clearing a lot, tie-down and hookups are priced separately.
