A mobile home that starts in Utah needs a Tax Commission moving permit (form TC-138) before UDOT will issue an oversize permit. You get it from the County Assessor in the county the home is leaving. A single-wide typically costs $3,500 to $6,500 to move and a double-wide $7,500 to $13,500, for a move of about an hour.
Have these ready
- Your home's title or ownership record
- Proof property taxes are current
- Make, model and serial number
- Current and new addresses
- Your preferred moving dates
The Utah Movable Structure Tax Clearance (TC-138)
For a home that starts its move in Utah, UDOT requires the Utah State Tax Commission's Movable Structure Tax Clearance / Moving Permit, form TC-138. These are the rules UDOT lists:
- Get it from the County Assessor in the county where the home starts
- Put a copy on the rear end of the home where enforcement officers can see it
- Carry proof in the home, as Utah Code 41-1A-1320 requires
- Show proof before or when you apply, because no oversize permit is issued without it
See the Tax Commission form TC-138 and the UDOT manufactured home page.
UDOT limits for mobile homes
UDOT lists the following for manufactured and mobile homes. Eaves count toward the width.
| Item | UDOT limit |
|---|---|
| Legal width | 8 feet 6 inches, measured wall to wall |
| Legal height | 14 feet |
| Home length | 45 feet; 65 feet overall with the tow vehicle |
| Single-trip permit | Homes over 14'6" up to 16' on their own running gear, with working axle brakes |
| One pilot escort | 12 feet wide on secondary highways, 14 feet on a freeway |
| Two pilot escorts | 14 feet wide on secondary highways, 16 feet on a freeway |
Rules change. Confirm them with UDOT before you move.
Tow vehicle rules
- At least a 120-inch wheelbase for a conventional cab
- At least four rear tires
- Side mirrors that show the full length of the home on both sides
Moving across the Wasatch Front and beyond
Utah's population sits along the Wasatch Front, with canyons, mountain passes and desert highways on either side. We choose routes that fit the width and weight of your home and avoid peak traffic.
- Freeways and secondary highways have different escort thresholds
- Mountain passes and winter weather can close roads
- Desert distances mean longer driving days
- Hookups, skirting and tie-down are priced separately
See our permits guide and services.
