Mobile Home Moving Permits: Do You Need One and How They Work
Almost every mobile home move on public roads needs a permit. We are the trailer house movers who plan your route, get the permits it requires and move your home. Tell us where it is going and get a free quote.

Do you need a permit to move a mobile home?
Yes, almost always. Most states limit road vehicles to 8 feet 6 inches wide. Single-wides are commonly 14 to 18 feet wide, and each section of a double-wide is commonly 12 to 16 feet wide, so the load is oversize. Each state issues its own permit, so a move through three states needs three permits.

Permit rules differ: two state examples
To show how much the rules differ, here is a comparison of what two states publish. Your state may be different, so we check the current rules for every move.

How much do mobile home permits cost?
Each state sets its own permit fees, and some add routing, escort and pilot car costs. In North Dakota, for example, a single-trip permit is $20 plus a $15 routing fee, and pilot cars are extra on wide loads. Permit costs are part of your moving quote.
A single-wide typically costs $3,500 to $6,500 to move and a double-wide $7,500 to $13,500, for a move of about an hour. Ranges reviewed October 2026.
