In Nebraska, a mobile home must have a title before it is moved, and a home that was attached to land needs an Affidavit of Detachment first. The Nebraska Department of Transportation then issues the oversize permit. A single-wide typically costs $3,500 to $6,500 to move and a double-wide $7,500 to $13,500, for a move of about an hour.
Have these ready
- Certificate of title for the home
- Lien releases, if any
- Recorded Affidavit of Detachment, if the home was affixed
- Current and new addresses
- Your preferred moving dates
Titles, affixed homes and detachment in Nebraska
Nebraska treats a mobile home as personal property with a title until it is permanently attached to land. The Nebraska DMV explains the rules:
- A home is affixed when its wheels, hitches and running gear are removed and it is attached to a foundation
- To cancel the title, the owner surrenders it to the county treasurer with an Affidavit of Affixture
- To move an affixed home, the owner must first record an Affidavit of Detachment with the Register of Deeds
- The county motor vehicle office needs a copy of the recorded affidavit before it issues a new title
Recording fees are $10 for the first page and $6 for each additional page. See the Nebraska DMV page. I could not confirm a separate county moving permit or tax step for Nebraska, so check with your county treasurer and assessor.
Nebraska oversize permit rules
The Nebraska Department of Transportation issues oversize permits. These are the points that matter most, from a compliance publisher's summary.
| Rule | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Manufactured housing | Maximum 16 feet wide; housing plus tow unit up to 125 feet; permit valid up to 10 moving days |
| Signs | OVERSIZE LOAD signs when more than 10 feet wide |
| Flags | Red or orange 18-inch flags at all four corners over 12 feet wide |
| Escorts | Required over 12 feet wide; in front on undivided highways, behind on divided |
| Travel hours | 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset unless the permit says otherwise |
| Single-trip fee | $15 for an oversize-only single-trip permit |
Holiday restrictions are listed on each permit. Fees and rules change, so confirm them with the Nebraska Department of Transportation before you move.

Moving along the Platte and across the plains
Most of Nebraska's population lives along the Interstate 80 corridor, with long two-lane roads north and west. We pick routes that suit the width of the home and the road type, because the escort position depends on whether the road is divided.
- Interstate 80 is the main east-west route
- Divided and undivided roads use different escort positions
- Wind and winter weather are planned around
- Hookups, skirting and tie-down are priced separately
