In Indiana, the county treasurer must issue a Manufactured (Mobile) Home Permit before your home moves. The treasurer issues it only after taxes, assessments and penalties due are paid, and the permit is good for 90 days. A single-wide typically costs $3,500 to $6,500 to move and a double-wide $7,500 to $13,500, for a move of about an hour.

The Indiana county moving permit (State Form 7878)

Indiana State Form 7878, from the Department of Local Government Finance, is the permit that lets a mobile home move. It says:

  • You get the permit from the county treasurer before the home moves from one location to another
  • The treasurer issues it only after all taxes, special assessments, interest, penalties, judgments and costs due are paid
  • The treasurer must issue it within two business days of a completed application
  • It expires 90 days after it is issued
  • You provide a state-issued title, a court order, or a BMV Affidavit of Sale or Disposal
  • A mover may not start the move unless the owner shows a permit dated within 90 days, and the mover displays it during transit

After the home is placed on land, the owner files a Form 1 Notice of Placing with the assessor within 30 days. See State Form 7878.

Moving across the Hoosier State

Indiana is mostly flat with a dense grid of divided highways and two-lane county roads, and the escort position changes with the road type. We plan the route so the escorts are in the right place.

  • Divided highways take a rear escort; undivided take a front escort
  • Holiday periods start at noon the day before
  • Storms and low visibility stop moves
  • Hookups, skirting and tie-down are priced separately
